It is the question we hear most at consultations: "laser or electrolysis?" The honest answer: it depends on your hair, your skin and the result you expect. We have practised electrolysis since 1963 — and there are still cases where we say: start with laser. This guide explains when each method makes sense.
"Permanent": what the FDA actually says
Advertising calls almost everything "permanent". The US regulator (FDA) is stricter and separates two very different claims:
Laser / IPL
"Permanent hair reduction." Laser destroys part of the follicles and weakens others. A share of hairs resists or returns over time — especially in hormonal areas. So no: laser hair removal is not fully permanent.
Electrolysis
"Permanent hair removal." The only method with this classification. Each treated follicle is destroyed individually and never produces hair again.
When laser is a good choice
Let's be fair: for large areas (legs, back, chest) with dark hair on light skin, laser is fast and efficient. It treats hundreds of follicles per pulse and clears most of the hair within a handful of sessions. If that is your case, it is a sensible starting point.
The problem is not the laser. The problem is expecting from laser what physics will not allow.
Where laser fails (and why)
Laser targets melanin, the dark pigment in hair. The light turns into heat inside the hair shaft and destroys the follicle. Without enough pigment, the light has no target:
- White and grey hair — no melanin means the laser is literally blind. No machine on the market solves this.
- Blonde, red and fine vellus hair — too little pigment to generate enough heat.
- Hormonal areas (face, neck, areolas) — risk of paradoxical hypertrichosis: low-grade heat can wake dormant follicles and thicken fine fuzz.
- The resistant 10–20% — even in the ideal scenario, a share of hairs always survives laser.
Electrolysis does not depend on pigment. The current works inside the follicle, one by one — white, blonde, red or fine. That is why it is the method of choice to finish what laser started.
What about cost? Sprint vs. marathon
Laser is sold per zone and per package; electrolysis is billed per minute. At first glance laser looks cheaper, but the real maths happens at the end: how many sessions until the result you can keep — and what happens to the hairs that remain. In electrolysis, every treated follicle is closed business. Rule of thumb: large area + dark hair = start with laser. Face, light hair, tanned or dark skin, hormonal causes, or laser already done without a final result = electrolysis.
The best of both worlds
