It starts quietly: one thicker hair on the chin, a more visible upper lip, fuzz that was not there before. From your 40s onwards, this is one of the most common concerns we see — and one of the least talked about. The good news: it has an explanation, and a permanent solution.
Why facial hair appears with age
Through perimenopause and menopause, oestrogen declines and androgens (the "male" hormones every woman produces) gain relative weight. On the face the result is twofold: scalp hair may thin, while the fuzz on the chin, upper lip and sideburns thickens. Fine, almost invisible vellus hairs turn terminal: coarser, darker or — increasingly with age — white.
It is not neglect and it is not bad luck. It is hormonal biology, and it reaches most women sooner or later. If growth is sudden or severe, talk to your doctor — conditions like PCOS can be behind it (see our article on PCOS and hirsutism).
The trap: why laser will not fix this
Two problems at once
First: menopausal hairs are often white or fine — without enough melanin, laser simply cannot "see" them. Second: on the face, low-grade laser heat can trigger paradoxical hypertrichosis — instead of removing hair, it wakes the dormant fuzz around it and thickens it.
And home methods? Tweezing and waxing rip the hair out with its root — the follicle often responds by rebuilding it stronger, and the cycle restarts every two weeks, now with the risk of folliculitis and dark patches on the upper lip. Shaving does not thicken hair, but the shadow is back the next morning. None of these paths ends the story.
The permanent fix for the face
Electrolysis treats the face the way it needs to be treated: hair by hair. The current destroys the germ cells inside the follicle — it works equally well on white, blonde or fine hair, because it does not rely on pigment. And since we only touch the problem follicle, there is no risk of stimulating the fuzz around it.
Chin and upper lip
The classic zones of hormonal change. Short, regular sessions remove the coarse hairs for good — no marks, no scars.
White hair and peach fuzz
Precisely the hairs laser cannot treat have been our daily work since 1963.
At the pace of your hormones
While your body is changing, new hairs can appear. We treat them as they come until the phase stabilises — then it is occasional maintenance, further and further apart.
