Those red, irritated little bumps that show up days after hair removal. On the bikini line, the underarms, the beard line. It's called folliculitis, and it is probably the most common complaint we hear from people who wax, shave or tweeze — and the reason so many eventually give up.
What folliculitis is (and what ingrown hairs are)
Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicle, usually caused by mild bacterial infection or mechanical irritation. It shows up as small red bumps, sometimes with a tiny spot of pus, that can itch or feel tender to the touch.
The most common trigger is the ingrown hair: after shaving or plucking, the hair regrows with a sharp, angled tip or a weakened root, curls, and grows into the skin instead of out of it. The body reacts to that hair as a foreign object — hence the inflammation.
Why it always shows up in the same spots
It is no coincidence folliculitis keeps appearing in the same areas:
Bikini line
Coarse, curly hair, constant friction from clothing and warmth — the perfect combination for ingrown hairs.
Beard line (men)
Daily shaving cuts the hair close every single day, multiplying the chances of it growing back in.
Underarms
Thin skin and constant arm movement keep the area irritated, making it hard to heal between hair removal sessions.
Why waxing and shaving keep bringing it back
Shaving and waxing treat the symptom (visible hair), never the cause. The follicle stays intact and keeps producing hair — and as long as hair keeps growing, the risk of it growing in remains with every cycle. That is why folliculitis tends to be chronic in people who remove hair regularly: it is not poor hygiene, it is the hair's own mechanics starting over week after week.
What about laser?
Laser reduces hair volume over several sessions, but between sessions the remaining hair keeps being shaved or keeps growing — so the ingrown-hair cycle continues until treatment is complete. And, as we cover in our laser vs. electrolysis guide, a share of hairs (white, fine, light-coloured) simply does not respond to laser — and never stops growing in.
The permanent fix: end the follicle, not just the hair
