"Can I get laser hair removal while pregnant?" is one of the questions we hear most from expecting mothers. The short answer: most clinics, including ours, recommend waiting. Here is why — and what you can safely do in the meantime.
Why more hair appears during pregnancy
It is normal to notice more hair, darker or thicker, during pregnancy — especially on the face, belly and chest. Hormonal changes (rising oestrogen) prolong the active growth phase of hair (anagen phase), so fewer hairs shed on their natural cycle. In most cases, this reverses on its own in the months after birth, as hormones settle.
Why most treatments are paused
Both laser and electrolysis are, as common practice across most clinics and professional bodies, postponed during pregnancy — not because there is proof of direct harm, but as a precaution:
- Skin becomes more sensitive and prone to dark patches (melasma) during pregnancy, which can change how it reacts to any procedure.
- There is no large body of research on cosmetic procedures specifically in pregnant women — the lack of data leads to caution, not because harm is known, but because full safety cannot be confirmed either.
- Your body is continuously changing — results achieved now may not reflect what your hair looks like after birth and breastfeeding.
This is our policy and that of most of the industry. If you have questions about your specific case, always speak with your doctor or obstetrician first.
What you can do in the meantime
Shaving or trimming with scissors are safe options during pregnancy to manage temporary hair. Avoid plucking (waxing or tweezing) on more sensitive skin, and avoid depilatory creams without checking with your doctor first. Save your consultation for after birth (and if you are breastfeeding, talk to us about the right timing) — at that point we can plan your permanent treatment calmly, including any hair that appeared during pregnancy.
